The father was the head of the family, They have full control of their families especially their children. Main Leader of the family, all other family members have to be submissive to him

The father could even go as far as whipping his children, selling them into slavery, or even killing them if they did not obey his wishes. Due to the fact that the majority of men, or at least a good portion of them, were on the battlefield in Europe, women had to take over the role in certain key areas that were necessary for the victory of the US.
