The lines are narrated in what is known as free indirect speech, or at times called free indirect discourse. This is because the style combines the elements of a third person narration with a first person to describe the character's thoughts, feelings, or emotions.

Gregor was quite confused of how he changed in the dream therefore he was heavily affected by it and soon came to past. He felt sad when the raindrops pittered and pattered on the window pane which indeed matched his mood of how he was. This story is sat in Paris, France sometime in the mid-1800s. It describes a woman called Mathilde, who is unhappy with her material status and she dreams of being rich.  

One day, she receives an invitation for a ball and she becomes upset because she doesn't have a proper dress to wear. However, her husband decides to buy her a dress and spends all his savings, just to make her happy.

Mathilde doesn't appreciate what her husband did for her and she considers that she deserved to marry a man above her class.
