How is an explanatory essay different from an argumentative essay

Explanatory (or expository) Essays are similar to Argumentative Essays in that both require investigation of information and evidence to present an idea.

However, they are different because while Explanatory Essays simply explain a point of view to the readers from a neutral perspective and provide information, Argumentative Essays have to defend their perspective and convince the reader that the idea being presented is valid--which requires for more extensive research than Explanatory Essays.

The explanatory or expository essay is an academic paper used to present reports. It is a critical reflection about a topic, where the writer establishes his thesis, his position or personal comment, includes a general statement or thesis and specific evidence to support it. The objective of the argumentative essay is to defend a proposed thesis, trying to convince the reader of this proposal. Use a cultured, formal and simple language. The ideas are presented in a clear manner, there being a logical relationship between them.
