He wanted new Orleans, which was a valuable trade port for people living on the Mississippi river, the Spanish and French taxed shipments coming into the port so Jefferson wanted control of it. Napoleon gave the united states the rest of the Louisiana territory with it to end his ties with the new world so he could focus on his own internal problems
