It depends on where you live. Some snakes are more prevalent in certain areas than others. Also, what color is it? If it's a dusty sand color and you can see a rattle at its end, then it is most likely a rattle snake. You can find those easily in an Arizona Desert. If it's a reddish orange color, then it could be a corn snake. Those are found in wet areas, forests, and mountainous lands. Black snakes can live just about anywhere where they can find food and shaded shelter.

I think it's Virgina because Virginia was the home of the first surviving English colony. (Jamestown). The colony was also attacked and almost ruined.
