The English word infantry, which refers today to certain soldiers, is closely related to another English word infant that means baby.
Both words derive from Latin <em>infantem</em> meaning "young child, babe in arms". Infantry means "foot soldiers, force composed of those too inexperienced to be cavalry", so infantrymen were often young soldiers.
