Radical Republicans believed that Andrew Jackson had lenient policies that would not help African Americans reach the same political rights and opportunities as whites. They were able to join moderate Republicans and overturn Jackson’s veto on the Civil Rights Act. They approved the 14th Amendment which prohibited the states from abridging equality before the law. They also introduced the Reconstruction Act of 1867 which remove the right to vote and seek office by rebels.
