Earth rotates on its axis once every 24 hours, so that objects on its surface execute uniform circular motion about the axis wit

h a period of 24 hours. Consider only the effect of this rotation on the person on the surface. (Ignore Earth's orbital motion about the Sun.)(a) What is the speed and what is the magnitude of the acceleration of a person standing on the equator?Express the magnitude of this acceleration as a percentage of g.(b) What is the direction of the acceleration vector?(c) What is the speed and what is the magnitude of the acceleration of a person standing on the surface at 35°N latitude?(d) What is the angle between the direction of the acceleration of the person at 35°N and the direction of the acceleration of the person at the equator if both persons are at the same longitude?

Answer:

V = 4.63 10² m / s

ac = 3.37 10⁻²  m/s²

Explanation:

This is a uniform circular motion, so we can calculate centripetal laceration of the object

       ac = v² / r

Where v is the speed of the object and r the radius of the Earth, 6.37 106 m.

a) The speed of the object can be calculated from the distance traveled in the time called period (T)

       V = d / t

       T = 24 h (3600 c / 1 h) = 86400 s

Circle length d = 2π r

      V = 2π 6.37 10⁶/86400

      V = 4.63 10² m / s

With this data we calculate the acceleration of the body

     ac = (4.63 10²)² / 6.37 10⁶

     ac = 3.37 10⁻²  m/s²

To express the acceleration as a percentage of the acceleration of gravity we divide the two magnitudes

      Fraction = ac / g

      Fraction = 3.37 10⁻⁻² / 9.8

      Fraction = 3.4 10⁻³

      ac = 3.4 10⁻³ g

b) The acceleration vector is directed to the center of the circle which, in this case, being in Ecuador coincides with the center of the Earth

c) In this case the person continues to perform a circular movement, in a constant time of 24 h, what has changed is that since we are on a sphere the circle radius for 35ºN is different from the radius of the Tiera.

Let's use some trigonometry

       sin 35 = r / R

Where r is the radius of the circle and R is the radius of the Earth

      r = R sin 35

       r = 6.37 10⁶ sin 35

     r = 3.65 10⁶ m

We calculate the speed and acceleration at this point

    v = 2π 3.65 10⁶/86400

    v = 2.65 10² m / s

   ac = (2.65 10²)² / 3.65 10⁶

   ac = 1.9 10⁻² m/s²

d) The centripetal acceleration of the person at 35º is directed to the center of the circle and the acceleration of the mass is directed to the center of the earth, in this has one of 35 below the horizontal.

a concrete slab 20 m long and weighing 400,000 N is supported by one pillar. A 19,600 N car is parked 8 meters from one end, whe
Elden [556K]

let the distance of pillar is "r" from one end of the slab

So here net torque must be balance with respect to pillar to be in balanced state

So here we will have

Mg(r - L/2) = mg(L/2 - 8)

here we know that

mg = 19600 N

Mg = 400,000 N

L = 20 m

from above equation we have

400,000(r - 10) = 19,600 (10 - 8)

r - 10 = 0.098

r = 10.098 m

so pillar is at distance 10.098 m from one end of the slab

Two asteroids in outer space collide and stick together. The mass of each asteroid, and the velocity of each asteroid before the
Alekssandra [29.7K]

Answer:

(5) It depends on whether the collision was elastic or inelastic.

Explanation:

Due to the absence of external forces and the fact that masses and initial velocities are known, it is needed to determine if collision is elastic or inelastic. If collision is inelastic, the Momentum Principle is sufficient to calculate final momentum, but if it is elastic, the Momentum Principle should be complemented with the application of the Energy Principle.

Hence, the correct answer is (5).

Across a horizontal distance of 25 feet, a roller coaster has a steep drop. The height of the roller coaster at the bottom of th
allsm [11]

X = total horizontal distance = 25 ft

Y = total vertical distance = 125 ft

x = horizontal distance = 1 ft

y = vertical distance = ?

using the equation

y = (Y/X) (x)

inserting the values

y = (125/25) (1)

y = 5 ft

hence for each horizontal foot, the average height change is 5 ft

or

25 ft horizontal distance traveled = 125 ft vertical distance dropped

dividing both side by 25

25 ft horizontal distance traveled/25 = 125 ft vertical distance dropped/25

1 foot horizontal distance traveled = 25 ft vertical distance dropped

Which of the following terms best describes a group of thousand galaxies?
Ivahew [28]
Hey there! :D

Cluster- a group of stars or galaxies forming a relatively close association.

Constellation- A group of stars that makes a shape, and has a name that is well known.

Solar system- a system of planets revolving around a center, or sun.

Universe- the whole wide range of galaxies, stars, and solar systems that were ever formed.

The best answer would be "Cluster" because the universe is infinite, they are millions of galaxies, solar systems, and constellations in it. The question only states 'a thousand galaxies'. This is of one kind. This best works for the question.

I hope this helps!

What is a catastrophic event?
kifflom [539]
Catastrophic events are sudden, natural or man-made, situations where change & destruction occur. All catastrophic events are the Earth's way of maintaining equilibrium during change.
