When Aramis is standing on the handkerchief, D'Artagnan goes over to Aramis and picks up the handkerchief. Aramis only gives a cold stare to the man ,D'Artagnan at the time. After the guards left the room, he then told D'Artagnan that he was being "ungallant" by mentioning the women's handkerchief. It was actually the woman who was his mistress and he was found out because the handkerchief was picked up and given to him. He then challenged D'Artagnan to a duel to be started at 2 that afternoon.
