Similarities:

Both involve ion movement. Both use ion channels to move ions across the cell membrane, in or out of the cell.

Differences:

Passive Transport (or Diffusion) moves ions from high concentration to low, using no metabolic energy. Active Transport moves ions from low concentration to high, using metabolic energy in the form of ATP.  Active Transport uses an ion pump (or Sodium/Potassium pump) to move 3 sodium ions out of the cell and 2 potassium ions in to the cell through the energy of 1 ATP molecule.

In active transport particles move against a concentration gradient and therefore require energy which must be supplied by the cell. Carrier proteins that are found in the cell membrane of cells use energy to transport molecules or ions across the membrane, against the concentration gradient.

Passive transport is a naturally-occurring phenomenon and does not require the cell to exert any of its energy to accomplish the movement. In passive transport, substances move from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration.

Passive transport examples:

A high concentration of oxygen outside the cell relative to inside the cell will lead to the diffusion of oxygen from outside to inside the cell. (Diffusion)

If you were to drink a lot of salt water, water would flow out of your cells so that both solutions in and outside of your cells were isotonic since the salt water would have a lot of salt in comparison to the intracellular environment. This is also why it is dangerous to drink a lot if salt water. (Osmosis)

Aquaporin protein facilitates the transport of water in and out of the cell. ( facilitated diffusion)

Active transport examples: white blood cells engulf bacteria (phagocytosis)

The number of chromosomes in each cell goes from diploid to haploid after
Minchanka [31]
In the picture below, you see where Mitosis 1 starts with a Diploid (sn = 4) and finishes with 2 haploid (n = 2)
In people (2n = 46) who have 23 sets of chromosomes is diminished significantly toward the end of Meiosis 1 (n = 23).

I hope this helped ^_^

A healthy individual is a carrier of a lethal allele but is unaffected by it. What is the probable genotype of this individual?
sergey [27]
To carry a lethal allele but not be affected by it, said allele would most likely be a recessive allele, masked by a healthy dominant allele. The dominant allele would take precedence and thus protect the individual from the lethal one. Therefore, if the gene was labeled with the letter a, the gene would be Aa, the A being the dominant (healthy) allele and the a being the recessive (lethal) gene.
