Mariachi began at Jalisco during the 19th century. It is theorized that it comes from a festival in honor of the virgin Maria H., thus the name Mariachi (mah-ree-ah AH-chay). The instruments (violins, guitars, vihuelas and harps) used in Mariachi is from Spanish influence and was more popularized by the Criollos.
