Dudley Hardy born in Sheffield, 1867, was a British painter and illustrator, turned poster and advertising design expert.
In 1890, he promoted and was essential to the expanding the ideas from the French Art Nouveau, which is graphic pictorial qualities which depicts the a methodical approach to theatrical poster design: that is, lettering and figures, appearing on a flat background. Example of his work is "A Gaiety girl" which has iconic status like the French "Parisians' cherette".
Dudley Hardy was a British painter and illustrator. He started learning from his father Thomas Bush Hardy who was also a marine painter until he went to study in Germany and Paris. With his experience in Paris during the 1890s, He was able to bring about introduction of graphic art qualities of the French poster to British billboards
Dudley developed a formula for applying lettering and figures against simple flat backgrounds in theatrical poster work:. He was well know and applauded for his poster for the play A Gaiety Girl.
