<em>The Awakening </em>is an illustration created by Henry Mayer (shown below). It appeared during Empire State Campaign, a referendum held in 1915 on a proposed amendment to the New York State constitution that would have granted women the right to vote. However, New Yorkers voted against the referendum, and women across the US gained the right to vote in 1920.

We can see that women's rights increased and their roles went through important changes between the 1890s and the 1950s. More occupations became available to women during this time (e.g. in 1910, the first policewoman was appointed in Los Angeles), and women could now hold important positions (Rebecca Latimer Felton became the first woman US senator in 1922). These are only some of the changes in the lives of women that took place during the first half of the 20th century.
