The land routes to Asia were very dangerous and risky so the Europeans wanted to find a direct route by sea that would hopefully be more efficient. The long route to Asia (such as the one Christopher Columbus took) involved to much supplies and took way to long to arrive at their destination making the trip very costly. i hope this helps!
