Answer:

1- quienes

2- que

3- que

4- quien

5- que

6- que

Explanation:

In this exercise, you have to fill in the blanks with the Spanish relative pronouns "quien" and "que". The Relative Pronouns in Spanish are a type of pronoun used to refer to a person, animal or thing that has already been mentioned previously, and the pronoun is used in order to avoid repetition. The Relative Pronouns are also used to connect two sentences together, where the second clause qualifies the subject of the first, as in the following cases:

1- Jaime y Tina son las personas a quienes conocí la semana pasada (the people whom I met last week).

2- Quieren comprar una casa que está en las afueras de la ciudad (a house that is on the outskirts of the city).

3- Es una casa que era de una artista famosa (a house that/ which belonged to a famous artist).

4- La artista, a quien yo conocía, murió el año pasado y no tenía hijos (the artist, who/ whom I knew, died last year and had no children).

5- Ahora se vende la casa con todos los muebles que ella tenía (the furniture that she had).

6- La sala tiene una alfombra que ella trajo de Kuwait. La casa tiene muchos estantes, a Tina le encanta (a rug that/ which she brought from Kuwait).

In order to distinguish between "que" and "quien", here follows an explanation of their uses:

Que can refer to a person, place, or thing and means that, which, who, or whom. It is used when the relative pronoun comes immediately after the antecedent, as in:

2- Quieren comprar una casa que está en las afueras de la ciudad.

3- Es una casa que era de una artista famosa.

5- Ahora se vende la casa con todos los muebles que ella tenía.

6- La sala tiene una alfombra que ella trajo de Kuwait. La casa tiene muchos estantes, a Tina le encanta.

In all the previous sentences, the relative pronoun follows immediately the antecedent and has nominal or subject function, since "que" stands for the antecedent and can be replaced for its antecedent.

-Quieren comprar una casa que está en las afueras de la ciudad.

-que está en las afueras de la ciudad.

-una casa está en las afueras de la ciudad.

Quien can only refer to a person and means who or whom. Quien must match its antecedent in number and it is commonly used after prepositions like a, para and con.

1- Jaime y Tina son las personas a quienes conocí la semana pasada.

4- La artista, a quien yo conocía, murió el año pasado y no tenía hijos.

In these sentences, the relative pronoun follows a preposition and refers to a person, so you must use quienes in the first case (the antecedent is plural) and quien in the second case (the antecedent is singular).

How would you explain the definition of “cognates” when talking about language.
PolarNik [594]
I would choose C) Cognates are words that share the same background and are similar in spelling.

This is because I've learned in my Spanish class that a cognate is a word in a language (i.e. spanish) looking similar and having the same meaning of a word in another language (i.e. English)
