The Ghana Empire, also known as the Wagadou Empire was a civilization in Ghana which lasted from 700 until 1240 AD. The empire was able to thrive due to its vast salt and gold reserves. These resources were highly valued at the time and were the main source of income of the empire.

In order to maintain the value of gold, the Wagadou would regulate the supply of gold, reducing the output from their mines in order to maintain a certain level of scarcity in the market. This helped the precious metal to maintain a high price, resulting in a continuous profitable trade for the Wagadou.
