One of the main principles that Gandhi followed, and which has made him famous in history is his defense of non-violence. Gandhi believed that it was possible for people to change their political and social reality through peaceful methods.

This speech is likely to appeal to the viceroy because the viceroy was most likely concerned about violence or conflict between English and Indian people. As India moved towards its goal of independence, the British government was likely to be concerned with the possibility of violence, and thus was reassured when the violence was condemned by an important Indian character.

Which two lines of text in this excerpt from William Dean Howells's "Editha" demonstrate the author’s opposition to conventional
Debora [2.8K]

Answer:

"You just expected him to kill someone else, some of those foreigners, that weren't there because they had any say about it, but because they had to be there, poor wretches—conscripts, or whatever they call 'em"

These lines are a manifestation of author's strong opposition to the traditional ways of showing patriotism, showing empathy towards the poor and helpless foreigners who could not do anything and were likely to be killed.
