The police attacked the protesters and innocent bystanders.

Further Explanation:

The democratic convention took place in Chicago in the year 1968. Supporters and delegates of the Democratic party gathered in international Amphitheater where they were going to nominate the Presidential candidate from the Democratic party but at the same time, there were thousands of protesters who gathered in front of the Amphitheater as they were marching against the Vietnam war and its political status. Just by the time, Vice-President Herbert Humphrey was declared as the presidential candidate, The protesters strongly objected to this announcement and there was bloodshed all over the streets of Chicago which involved the Police, Protesters, and Bystanders.

By the time night arrived, the protest was even more fired up as there was a direct confrontation between the police and protesters and police was clearing the crowd by thrashing bystanders also. The use of tear gas by the police was so much that it reached up to the 25th floor where the presidential candidate Humphrey was staying. This protest went on for another two days and finally ended with the end of the Democratic convention.
