In New England, Puritans much more engaged in trade, whaling, and fishing because of its geography, which did not allow settlers to grow crops. The region's cover with rocky soil, large trees, mountains, and a harsh winter climate which made farming impossible.  They never grew cash crops and weren't associated with slavery, especially chattel slavery.
