This passage uses imagery of sight - it explains everything that the narrator sees: I saw the water, I saw only my round refection, colors and lights need vision to see and then reflecting anything I could see around me.
The last sentence the narrator can only see what's around them and can no longer see anything reflected through the water (since the water shook)
By saying that the two locks of hair conspired to do something, the author is attributing a characteristic of human nature to the locks of hair which on fact are non living (or human) entities
