At age 18, Lucia is planning her schooling and career with the goal of becoming an attorney. Both of her parents are attorneys,
and it was always expected that Lucia would also become one. Lucia has never considered any other options for fear of going against her parents’ wishes. According to James Marcia, Lucia most likely is experiencing:
Identity foreclosure occurs when someone believes they know their identity or who they are and what they want to be based on the influential factors around them or based on the fact that they have grown up in an environment that is only surrounded by that type of identity.
For example if someone grow up in a Christian home they always believe they are Christians eventhough they have not personal established this journey by themselves.
This is most common in teenagers they usually identify by their family or friends.
Lucia has grown up in a family of attorneys so she doesn't know anything else but the career of attorneys who has influenced her towards wanting to be an attorney herself without having explored what else is out there that she may also like ; this is identity foreclosure.
James Marcia is a psychologist who proposed a theory of identity development for teenagers.
According to him, teenagers go through different stages when going through crisis:
Foreclosure
: In this state, the adolescent blindly accepts whatever ideology or values system that has been given to them from their parents or family members. They don't question themselves in terms of if that's what they really want.
Identity Diffusion
: During this stage there is no commitment to anything or ability to develop one’s sense of self. The adolescent explores different options but without really committing to any of them
Moratorium
: The adolescent keeps exploring his options but also shows a little real commitment to an ideology or occupation, he wonders about alternate life choices.
Identity Achievement
: the adolescent shows a commitment to an ideology or more direction in terms of occupational goals. These decisions have been autonomously made and reached after careful thinking.
In this example, Lucia's mom and dad are attorneys who always expected Lucia to become one too. She doesn't consider any other options for fear of going against her parent's wishes. We can see that <u>Lucia is accepting the wishes and ideology that has been given to her from their parents and she is not even questioning herself in terms of if becoming an attorney is what she really wants. </u>Therefore, we can say that Lucia is most likely experiencing foreclosure.
Personally I feel that it would be more difficult today. Yes I understand the bad conditions of soldiers in the revolutionary war due to bad hygiene and etc. But taking into consideration, the soldiers today are likely fighting jihadists that want nothing to do with America and will pretty much do anything to kill their enemies, hence us.
Mesopotamia's geography helped it develop because Mesopotamia was located near the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. These rivers and the climate of the area helped to create an incredibly fertile region that developed agriculturally quickly and allowed Mesopotamian society to prosper there.
