Answer: desertification natural desert formation

A rain shadow effect refers to the climatic condition which is influenced by the mountains in the region. The mountain will remain warm and dry on one side and remains wet and cool on other side. It happens when the air mass moves from a low to a high elevation, it cools. The cool air forms clouds which drops as rain and snow. As, the clouds moves to other side of the mountain, they dissipates, and the region on that side acquires no or less rainfall. Hence, because of lack of precipitation the plants of the region does not get water to survive, therefore desertification results.
