Sharecropping was a form of agriculture that became common during Reconstruction. This method of farming was one of the consequence of the end of slavery in the South of the United States. Under this system, the landowner provided land, tools and seeds to a farmer. Additionally, a local merchant provided supplies on credit. After harvest, the farmer divided the crops between the landowner and himself. He then used some of his own part to pay the merchant.
