With no money, nor education or experience doing anything but slaving away on a white man’s farm, many of them had to sign labor contracts with former masters for payment often worse than the one they had during slavery.

In exchange, servants pledge allegiance to the Lord and tenaciously worked for him. The church was a big part of society in those years. Religion was the kind of bond that made relationships easier and gave people reason to exist.
