Each country had a different economic system (capitalism in the USA and communism in the SU), which caused competition.
This competition led to military competition and a nuclear arms race, which was called the Cold War. The nuclear arms race became the greatest point of tension.
The Republicans in Congress disagreed with President Johnson’s plan for Reconstruction because it did not include a plan for giving the "federal government" a role <span>in southern state governments. The Republicans wanted the US government to play an active role in Reconstruction since they didn't trust the South to do it alone. Johnson was more trusting. </span>
