People with sickle cell anemia have an abnormal version of hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is the protein that allows the red blood cell to carry oxygen through the body. This altered Hemoglobin is usually called sickle hemoglobin because of its "sickle" shape instead of the normal oval shape. Sickle Cell Anemia is hereditary.
