The reasoning behind that decision was rooted in the idea that drafts are used to build pools of combat troops in times of war. Since women could not serve in combat, they could not be drafted. I believe that the changes have been positive because it has changed to allow women to serve our country as well as men. I believe that the only concerns would be universal regardless of gender, both men and women would still be risking their lives.
