1) Margaret Knight was born in 1838 in Maine, where she invented kites and sleds for her siblings. These projects led to her coming up with new safety features for factories that she patented when she was only 12 years old, which propelled her to later success when she received 26 patents for her inventions. For this reason, some called her the "female Edison.
