The classic colonial policy, "divide and rule" had a major impact on Sri Lanka's and Rwanda's internal affairs as even after the colonialists left, the society remained divided.

In Sri Lanka, the majority population and the minority is divided geographically, where majority is dominant in the southern part and the minority is dominant in the northern part.  Moreover, the political institutions and mainly the minority political parties adapted a radical and racist approach which led to conflict in the years after.
