When the sun and moon are near the horizon, we notice that they are distorted from a circular form into ovals, and are usually o

f a reddish colour. The former effect is due to the fact that the amount of refraction changes rapidly near the horizon, being greater below than above. Thus the lower edges of these bodies are raised more than the upper ones, so that the vertical diameter is diminished. The horizontal diameter is not affected, and so the sun and moon appear to be oval and not circular. Their reddish colour is due to absorption. White light is composed of all the “colours of the rainbow” —red, yellow, green, blue, violet, etc., —and of these, the green, blue, and violet (the shorter “waves”) are more readily absorbed by the atmosphere, or rather its vapours (for pure dry air exercises scarcely any absorption), than the red and yellowish rays (which are longer).
THUS THIS PROCESS OF SELECTIVE ABSORPTION RESULTS IN THE LOSS OF A GREATER AMOUNT OF THE BLUE AND VIOLET RAYS, AND SO THE SUN AND MOON, WHEN SEEN LOW DOWN NEAR THE HORIZON, APPEAR REDDISH OR YELLOWISH RATHER THAN WHITE, an effect seen also when the sun shines through a “November fog.”

The correct answer to this question is: TRUE.

The section written in all caps is a <em>conclusion</em> of the previous explanation, therefore, <em>it expresses the main idea in the text</em>. A conclusion consists of a recapitulation of the introduction, which usually expresses the main idea in a text. The first sentence wrote, "When the sun and moon are near the horizon, we notice that they are distorted from a circular form into ovals, and are usually of a reddish color" tells the reader what is the main information or idea the writer is trying to convey. All that follows is an explanation of the reasons why that phenomenon happens. In the end, the section written in all caps resumes the introduction and adds a summary of the information given. Thus, this section can be considered an example of the main idea presented in the beginning.

What does the family often grumble about? Make a list of things the family is not content with from grumble family
IceJOKER [234]

Answer:

The Grumble family found fault with everything and nothing, from the weather to the rains and the sun. And if there is nothing to grumble about, <em>"they'd growl that they'd nothing to grumble about."</em>

Explanation:

Lucy Maud Montgomery's poem "The Grumble Family" presents a neighborhood scene. In the poem, the speaker focuses on a particular family and their 'unsatisfactory' reaction to everything and how they are never contented with anything.

The Grumble family 'grumbles' about nothing and everything. Ranging from weather to complaining about nothing to grumble about, the family never seems to run out of issues to find fault with.

They grumble about <em>"the weather . . . the rain . . . the sun . . ."</em> That's not all, <em>"if everything pleased them . . . They'd growl that they'd nothing to grumble about!" </em>

Read the excerpt below:
alex41 [277]

Answer: C, To argue that the DREAM act would ultimately help undocumented students become productive members of society.

Explanation: The key part of this exceprt is "Congress <em>should </em>consider..."

This indicates that there is an argument being presented in the excerpt, and this doesn't accurately describe solving any immigration issues so the answer is C.

I got up before my alarm went off, arrived at school early, and slogged through the day like a sleepwalker. Finally the last bell chimed. "Ready?” Shondra asked, when we were alone again in the spare classroom. We had two hours until we had to meet our teacher backstage. Which statement best describes how the pacing of events heightens tension? The slow pace highlights how exhausted the narrator was on her big day."
