Hello,

Peter : x

Christine : x + 30 500

Sum : x + ( x + 30 500 ) = 190 500

x + x + 30 500 = 190 500

2x + 30 500 = 190 500

2x = 190 500 - 30 500 = 160 000

x = 160 000 / 2 = 80 000

Christine : 80 000 + 30 500 = 110 500

Sum : 110 500 + 80 000 = 190 500

We are given combined annual income of Christine and Peter =$190,500

let annual income of Christine =x

Annual income of Peter =y= 190,500 -x...........(1)

Now Christine earns $30,500 more than Peter

x=y+30,500...............(2)

plugging value of y from equation (1) in (2)

x=190500-x+30500

adding x on left side,

x+x=190500+30500

2x=221000

dividing both sides by 2

x=221000/2

x=110500

Annual income of Christine =x=$110,500

Annual income of Peter =y= 190,500 -x=190500-110500= $80,000

3x – 2y = 17 <br> –2x – 5y = 14 <br> Solve using Elimination Please show work
OleMash [197]

Answer:

The solution is x=3 , y=-4 or (3,-4)

Step-by-step explanation:

Given equations (1 and 2) are:

3x- 2y = 17\\-2x -5y = 14

To solve a system of equation with elimination method, the co-efficients of one of the variables has to be equated and then the equations are added or subtracted to get an equation in one variable.

Multiplying equation 1 by 2:

2(3x-2y) = 2*17\\6x-4y = 34\ \ \ \ \ Eqn\ 3

Multiplying equation 2 by 3

3(-2x-5y) = 3*14\\-6x-15y = 42\ \ \ \ Eqn\ 4

Adding equation 3 and 4

(6x-4y) + (-6x-15y) = 34+42\\6x-4y-6x-15y = 76\\-19y = 76\\\frac{-19y}{-19} = \frac{76}{-19}\\y = -4\\

Putting y = -4 in equation 1

3x-2(-4) = 17\\3x+8 = 17\\3x = 17-8\\3x = 9\\\frac{3x}{3} = \frac{9}{3}\\x = 3

Hence,

The solution is x=3 , y=-4 or (3,-4)

find the equation of a line that is parallel to the straight line 2x-y=-3 and crosses the x-axis at x=-5
Alecsey [184]

Answer:

y=2x+10

Step-by-step explanation:

In line equations its helpful to write your line in the form y = ax + b. This helps because a is always the gadient of the line and b is always the y intercept.

In this case it is y=2x+3

All parallel lines have the same gradient. The gradient of this line = 2.

If the line crosses the x axis at x=-5, then when x =-5 y = 0.

If you put all this in the form y =ax + b you get 0 = 2(-5) +b

So all you need to do to find b is rearrange. b = 10.

Therefore your line has gradient 2 and y intercept 10.

y = 2x + 10
