There are five vowels sounds in English language, namely: A, E, I, O, U. When one of these vowel sounds is repeated by using different words, that is assonance.

Therefore, Assonance is simply the repetition of same vowel sound within different words in a phrase, sentence, paragraph, or in a line of poetry.

But, Alliteration is the repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning or neighboring words or words closely put together. The consonant sounds in English language are 21, which are [b, c, d, f, g, h, j, k, l, m, n, p, q, r, s, t, v, w, x, y, z].

1. Alliteration is the repetition of sounds that are similar or identical to each other and it is normally at the beginning of the words. Alliteration can also be a great literary device and in recent times, many authors have used it to enhance the meanings of their words. In order to link words with each other to produce an effect, alliteration is also known as the head rhyme. An example of the alliteration will be ‘Peter piper Picked a Peck of Pickled Peppers’ and the word ‘alliteration’ was first time used and coined by the Italian humanist, Giovanni Pontano in 15th century.

On the other hand, Assonance is the resemblance of sounds that are either between words or vowels. The special case of assonance is called a rhyme and in that the endings of the words are identical for example, Dog and fog or Mystery and history. Assonance takes place more often in verse than prose.  

2. The paradox is also known as the antinomy and in simple terms, it is a contradictory statement or any statement that is contrary to one’s expectation.
