The red color to the algae is the result of pigment phycoerythrin and phycocyanin. This pigment is responsible for providing red color to rodophytes.

They are marine with world wide distribution and are found more in the greater depths as compared to other sea weeds.

Some of the red algae are found attached on the sandy shores. Only 5 % of the fresh water algae are found across the world in various types of habitats.
