adding and subtracting linear expressions

Linear Expression - An algebraic expression in which the exponent of the variable is 1.

Examples: -4x 3X+5 5 - 1/6X

adding linear expressions

Like adding numbers, we can add linear expressions horizontally or vertically.

Horizontal Method

Change subtraction to addition using keep, change, change.

Eliminate parenthesis by using the distributive property.

Group like terms

Combine like terms ( don't forget to follow rules for adding integers!).

Example:

( -4y + 3 ) + ( 11y - 5 )

(-4y + 3) + (11y + -5)

-4y + 3 + 11y + -5

-4y + 11y + 3 + -5

7y + -2 OR 7y - 2

Vertical Method

Align like terms vertically

Use keep, change, change within algebraic expressions to change subtraction to addition

Add ( don't forget the rules for adding integers!).

(x - 2 ) + ( 3x + 8 )

( x - 2 )

+ ( 3x + 8)

2. ( x + -2)

+ ( 3x + 8)

3. 4x + 6

subtracting linear expressions

Like subtracting numbers, we can subtract linear expressions horizontally or vertically.

Horizontal method

Use keep change change within parenthesis to ensure that signs are correct

Use the distributive property to eliminate parenthesis

Group like terms

Combine like terms

Example

(7y + 5) - 2(4y - 3)

(7y + 5) - 2(4y + -3)

7y + 5 - 8y + 6

7y - 8y + 5 + 6

-y + 11

Vertical Method

Use keep change change to make sure that correct sign is used

Align terms vertically

Subtract

Example

(5x + 6) - (-x + 6)

( 5x + 6) + (x + 6)

5x + 6

+ x - 6

3. 6x

You are in charge of drinks for a community barbecue. You need to supply at least 120 cups of beverage to provide enough for the
olga nikolaevna [1]

Answer:

You have 112 cups of beverage

Step-by-step explanation:

* Lets explain how to solve the problem

- You need to supply at least 120 cups of beverage to provide enough

for the projected number of people that will attend

- Assume that a cup can fill by 8 fl. oz. (American standard)

- You have received the following donations

- Enough mix to make 4 gallons of lemonade

∴ You have 4 gallons of lemonade

∵ 1 gallon = 128 oz.

∴ 8 gallons = 4 × 128 = 512 oz.

∴ You have 512 oz. of lemonade

∵ You can fill one cup by 8 oz.

∴ The number of cups of lemonade = 512 ÷ 8 = 64 cups

- 6 bottles of fruit juice that each contain 64 fl. oz

∵ 6 × 64 = 384

∴ You have 384 oz. of fruit juice

∵ You can fill one cup by 8 oz.

∴ The number of cups of fruit juice = 384 ÷ 8 = 48 cups

- Now add the number of lemonade cups to the number of fruit

 juice cups

∵ There are 64 of lemonade cups

∵ There are 48 fruit juice cups

∴ The total number of cups = 64 + 48 = 112 cups

* You have 112 cups of beverage

Maria graphs the following 3 equations: y = 34, y = 3x2, and y = 6x.
Yuliya22 [10]

Answer:

Maria is not correct.

The graph of y = 3x grows at an increasingly increasing rate, but the graph of y = 3x2 grows at a constantly increasing rate.

Therefore, the graph of y = 3x will eventually surpass the graph of y = 3x2.

Lady_Fox [76]

Answer:

 • 15t +45 = 120
 • 5 hours

Step-by-step explanation:

Let t represent the number of hours of lessons Audrey can take. Then 15t will be the cost of the lessons. Her total cost will be ...

 15t +45 = 120 . . . an equation

 15t = 75

 t = 5

Audrey can afford 5 hours of lessons.
