Students were asked to write a response to an excerpt from Barrio Boy. Tyler selected the excerpt below. We stayed only one day

at the hotel, long enough for me to become acquainted with the bathtub, located in another closet next to the toilet. A rope of water twisted and whirled from a brass faucet, filling the tub. I sat in the cold water up to my neck and discovered that I could slide down the back of the tub and hit the bottom with a great splash. When my water party was interrupted, both the bathroom and I got a scrubbing. Which would be the most clear and detailed topic sentence to begin Tyler’s response?
A. In this excerpt, the author takes a bath and writes a lot about the details and he gets in some trouble.
B. In this excerpt, the author uses the bathtub and it is very cold and splashy.
C. In this excerpt, the author uses descriptive language to share his experience in a modern American bathroom.
D. In this excerpt, he tells about a tub and a faucet and a lot of new experiences he has in the United States.

Answer:

C. In this excerpt, the author uses descriptive language to share his experience in a modern American bathroom.

Explanation:

This is the topic sentence that would fit the best in Tyler's response. A topic sentence needs to be able to present the main ideas of the text. It should also  explain the main claim that the author is trying to make. In this text, the author is making a claim regarding the ideas expressed in the passage. Moreover, this sentence is written in a clear way and with words that are formal enough to fit the tone of the essay.
