Words such as 'bleak', 'dying', 'wrought', 'ghost', and 'sorrow' create an ominous and spooky atmosphere in "The Raven". These words have negative connotations, meaning that the words sound dark and frightening to the reader. For instance, if you wanted to create a spooky atmosphere in the following sentence, you might replace the verb with another word that has a more negative connotation.

A chill passed through the room.
A chill crept across the room.

While both sentences mean essentially the same thing, the second sentence sounds scarier because the verb has a more negative connotation.

Hope this helps!

The words that create an ominous and spooky atmosphere are'bleak', 'dying', 'wrought', 'ghost', and 'sorrow'

Further Explanation:

The poem "The Raven" written by Edgar Allan Poe is the feeling of a person after the death of his beloved. The narrator in the poem wants to forget about the death of his beloved. For this, he starts to read 'forgotten lore'. Amid this scene arrives a Raven. The Raven was able to respond to the narrator's questions. He only said 'nevermore' to any of the questions asked. The poet laments on this scene that a time will come when the raven too would fly away from his life leaving him alone. The narrator also comes to the conclusion that the raven must have been with his master who would be cruel and an unhappy soul. He gives the reason that it would be because it was the only word he has learned from him. The narrator asks many things from the raven to which he only responded 'nevermore'. This made him enraged towards the bird. He called him evil and asked him to return from where it had come. The poem ends with the note that the soul of the narrator has been trapped underneath the shadow of the raven from where he can never set himself free. There are elements in the poem which brings a gothic touch to it. The entering of the raven and its presence has been presented ominously. The overall atmosphere of the poem is spooky and has a ghostly appearance in it.

After experimenting with Shakespearean insults, think about the language that he used. What similarities can you find to our mod
riadik2000 [5.3K]

The language that Shakespeare used was significantly different from the English we use nowadays. This can sometimes complicate the reading of his works. Many words that were used in Elizabethan English are no longer in use. Some other still exist, but its meaning and connotation have changed.

Moreover, the Elizabethan alphabet contained 24 letters, less than the 26 we use nowadays, and some of these had slightly different pronunciations.
