A wigwam, wickiup or wetu is a domed dwelling formerly used by certain Native American and First Nations tribes.The domed, round shelter was used by many different Native American cultures. The curved surfaces make it an ideal shelter for all kinds of conditions. The structures are formed with a frame of arched poles, most often wooden, which are covered with some sort of roofing material.  Some of the roofing materials used include grass, brush, bark, rushes, mats, reeds, hides or cloth. Men built the wigwams and the women put on the coverings..Details of construction vary with the culture and local availability of materials.A typical wigwam in the Northeast had a curved surface which can hold up against the worst weather.A longhouse or long house is a type of long, proportionately narrow, single-room building built by peoples in various parts of the world including Asia, Europe, and North America. Many were built from timber and often represent the earliest form of permanent structure in many cultures.The Iroquois (Haudenosaunee or "People of the Longhouses") who resided in the Northeastern United States as well as Eastern Ontario and Quebec, canada,built and inhabited longhouses. Wigwams are round, domed huts that were used by many different Native American cultures.The curved surfaces of the wigwam made them an ideal shelter in many different types of climates and even the worst of weather conditions. To build a wigwam, Native Americans normally started with a frame of arched poles that were usually made of wood. The Longhouse (or Birch Bark House) was a long, narrow house that was traditionally built by the American Native Indians of the Northeast Woodlands. The main tribes who used the longhouse were those belonging to the powerful Iroquois Confederacy which included the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga and Seneca people. The Longhouses were built up to 200 feet long, 20 feet wide and 20 feet high. The frames of the longhouses were made with poles which were covered with bark that was cut into rectangular slabs. A variety of different trees were used to build a longhouse, depending on the tree’s strength, flexibility and resistance to decay. The roof of a typical Iroquois longhouse was rounded rather than peaked.
