a) Opening a story in the middle of the action.

Further Explanation:

In medias res is a very important literary device that is most useful in setting the course of the literary narrative from the very beginning of the story. Its literal meaning is ‘in the middle of things’. The story usually opens at a point which is of great significance to the potential to the story, and the story is usually narrated as a recounting of memories by the narrator. The situation where the story begins is a culmination of events that the reader shall gradually be familiar with, as the course of the narrative is closely followed. Homer’s Iliad has given us one of the earliest usages of this literary device, where the epic begins with the quarrel of Achilles and Agamemnon during the Trojan war. The reader might begin to feel a bit baffled at the beginning of the text, however, the dramatic instances that the story opens with keeps the reader’s interest in the novel.

The literary works that employ in medias res have a disjointed narrative, meaning that all parts and events of the novel do not occur in a chronological manner. The most potent way to describe an in medias res is a third-person narrative, which is in the form of flashbacks. Sometimes, the ‘narrator’ is not the main character. In medias res has its origins in an oral tradition, and has been embedded within the styles of epic poetry, both in Western and Oriental epics. Modern novelists have adapted this style of writing within their novels, thus adding a dramatic element to it, and making it more interesting for the audience. The concept of in medias res is heavily employed within the cinematic works, and several movies prefer to follow a disjointed narrative to impart a sense of mystery to the play.
