    During the Middle Kingdom, the pharaohs regained political power in Egypt. The capital became Thebes.

    During this period, territorial conquests brought economic prosperity. But some internal unrest would again weaken the empire, which made it possible, around 1750 BC, for the invasion of the Hyksos, a nomadic people of Asian origin. The Hyksos remained in Egypt for about 170 years.
