En la respiración celular, la célula depende totalmente de las reacciones Redox, para ser precisos de la reducción del NAD a NADH y la oxidación de NADH a NAD.

Ahora veamos una situación diferente.

En la fotosíntesis, ocurre la reacción inversa de redox, como se muestra en la siguiente ecuación:

6CO2 + 6H2O + E --> C6H12O6 + 6O2

La energía biológica se almacena y se lanza con la frecuencia por medio de reacciones redox. La fotosíntesis implica la reducción del CO2 en azucares y la oxidación del H2O en oxigeno molecular (O2), mientras que en la respiración es lo inverso, la oxidación de azucares a CO2 y H2O.

Entre los pasos redox de la fotosíntesis, compuestos deducidos del CO2 reducen el NAD lo que crea entonces, la creación gradiente de protones, que conduce a la síntesis del ATP y es mantenida por la oxidación del O2.
