A lunar eclipse takes place when the Earth is located right in front of the moon, between the moon and the sun, and therefore it prevents sun light from reaching the moon and reflecting on it. The only light that can reflect on the moon's surface in this situation is coming from the atmosphere of the Earth. The moon during a lunar eclipse is called a blood moon, because of its color.

All people who are on the night side of Earth can witness this phenomenon and it lasts a few hours. This contrasts sharply with the solar eclipse, that can be only seen from very specific places and only lasts a few minutes. For solar eclipses eye protection is necessary but not for lunar eclipses.
