Why is a stem and leaf plot called a stem and leaf plot?

A stem and leaf plot is called a stem and leaf plot because it is a table where each number in a set gets broken up into stems and leaves.

Stem = the first digit, or digits
Leaf = the last digit

Ex: The stem of 32 would be 3 and the leaf would be 2.

I'm assuming you need to evaluate/simplify the equation, so you need to isolate/get x by itself in the equation:

2(3x + 1) = 11 Divide by 2 on both sides

3x + 1 = $\frac{11}{2}$ [11/2 or 5.5] Subtract by 1 on both sides
