The video you just watched revolved around a poet's interpretation of the moment Julius Caesar chose to cross the Rubicon River.

Historically, at that moment Caesar is said to have muttered in Greek, "…let the dice fly!" However, when that moment is referred to by Medieval or Renaissance historians, they almost always use the Latin version rather than the Greek: "Alea Jacta Est." Why?

Alea iacta est ("The die is cast") is a variation of a Latin phrase (iacta alea est)  attributed by Suetonius to Julius Caesar who pronounced it in the year 49 B.C. when he was leading his army across the Rubicon river in the current territories of Northern Italy. Subsequently, he entered in Italy heading his army and defying the Roman Senate and it meant the beginning of the civil war versus Pompey and the Optimates.

  • Plutarch, referred to the same event in his written testimonies and reported the phrase but stating it was pronounced in Greek instead of Latin and that its translation meant: <em>'Let the die be cast'.</em>
  • Suetonius described the same situation, reporting a very similar phrase but not exactly the same. Let's include the exact excerpt of his writings where he did so.

<em>Caesar: '... iacta alea est,' inquit.</em>

<em>Caesar said, "The die has been cast."</em>

Thefore there are two very similar versions of the same historical events. Usually the Latin version is the most widely known, as the Latin language was more widespread all over Europe and gave rise to all the current family of Latin languages (Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, etc).

Why was it important for business leaders and other concerned citizens to have secret talks with the exiled ANC and the imprison
Yuri [45]

Answer:

The apartheid system in South Africa was ended through a series of negotiations between 1990 and 1993 and through unilateral steps by the de Klerk government. These negotiations took place between the governing National Party, the African National Congress, and a wide variety of other political organisations. Negotiations took place against a backdrop of political violence in the country, including allegations of a state-sponsored third force destabilising the country. The negotiations resulted in South Africa's first non-racial election, which was won by the African The life story of Nelson Mandela is well known, and has elevated him to the level of such widely recognized heroes as Mahatma Gandhi and Mother Teresa. There is indeed much courage, sacrifice, wisdom and nobility in his life – attributes that demand our deep respect and have much to teach us.

What is less well-known is how Mandela evolved into the kind of strategic leader who, from prisons on Robben Island and elsewhere, helped to bring genuine democracy to South Africa. For example, while isolated from his fellow prisoners by force, he steered secret government meetings toward the abolishment of apartheid and free elections. Subsequent to that, he became the country’s first democratically elected black president.

What are the three reasons Socrates refuse to escape prison
horrorfan [7]

Socrates was charged of not honoring the gods of Athens and of corrupting the youth. He received the death sentence for<em> mora</em>l <em>corruption </em>and <em>impiety</em>. His refusal to escape was because:

1 - to flee would idicate a fear of death, which he didn't have.

2 - escaping would make his friends liable in law.

3 - this could cause him to break his "social contract" with the state, and he didn't want to harm the state.

In the 1500s, what was China's policy regarding trade with foreign cultures?
kolbaska11 [484]
The choices can be found elsewhere and as follows:

China traded freely with other cultures.
<span>China traded only with other Asian cultures. </span>
<span>China sold goods but took only silver in payment. </span>
<span>China imported but did not export goods.
</span>
I believe the correct answer is the third option. <span>In the 1500s, </span>China sold goods but took only silver in payment. Hope this answers the question.
