An example of such an adaptation might be giraffes developing long necks, so as to feed upon foliage other animals are not able to reach.

The adapted species are selected for survival through the process of natural selection as they are more suited to survive as compared to the species who has not adapted to their environment. Thus, adaptation is extremely important for survival.
