Pershing's push into Mexico was called a “punitive expedition” ____________________
Viktor [21]

a.  so that it would not be mistaken for an invasion.

Pershing entered into Mexico to find and capture Pancho Villa for killing Americans. The march into Mexico was not an act against the Mexican government but rather to capture a threat to American safety.

Pancho Villa had battled Carranza for leadership of Mexico after Huerta resigned. The US recognized Carranza as the leader of Mexico and it retaliation Villa attacked US citizens in New Mexico. In retaliation and in an attempt to capture Villa, Pershing led military forces into Mexico. Despite US support of Carranza's government, Carranza saw this as a violation of Mexico's sovereign borders. The Mexican government attacked the US forces, however the US forces recovered and continued into Mexico to search for Villa. The Mexican government insisted US forces leave Mexico and after failed attempts to capture Villa, Pershing and his troops were forced to leave Mexico.

What new weapon made Allied leaders worry about the cost of invading the Japanese mainland?
Eduardwww [97]

The correct answer is the atomic bomb.

Shortly after the Allied powers had success in defeating Germany in the European theatre, this group turned their attention to how to defeat Japan in the Pacific theatre. In this case, the Allied powers (specifically the United States) considered a land invasion first. This would be similar to the land invasion conducted in Normandy, France. This type of invasion was predicted to result in millions of casualties.

However, instead of having millions of casualties from both the Allied and Axis powers, the US government considered using the atomic bomb. This bomb would result in less casualties and a quicker close to World War II. This weapon completely changed the way the Allied powers thought about their strategy against Japan.

How did the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan contribute to the fall of the Soviet Union?
hodyreva [135]
The answer is '4'.
The Soviet economy crumbled further due to the heavy military cost of the invasion.
The U.S. provided financial support to push them out and shorten the conflict.  The Red Army did suffer a loss of face but the collapse of the Soviet Union happened because military expenses drained their economy to such an extent that normal, everyday expenses could not be met.
