Answer:

Kafka's own life influenced the themes he incorporated in The Metamorphosis because he found himself a failure before his father.  He found himself failing in a career path he chose while abandoning literature which interested him.

The disappointment he felt in his failure formed his narrative on the Gregor, who lacks respect from the family. He became a bug to them and a total disappointment.

The link between the two lies in their inability to muster strentgh of character and win over their fathers. Both showed total submission to the will of the father, but which they fail to live up to and were emotionally defeated.
