Well first you have to clear your mind. Maybe playing soft music with no words would help. The only way I know of doing anything faster is by practicing... Probably not the answer you wanted, but you cant simply read faster by watching tv. Actually putting the closed captions works too, makes you keep up with everything, but like I said, it takes practice

But actually it should be:

I had a hard time deciding whether to write an essay about the works of Eudora Welty, Joan Didion, and Gwendolyn Brooks.
(Without the quotation marks and inclusion the word “and” before “Gwendolyn”)
