Explanation:

The civil rights movement happened during the 1950s and 1960s and was a period in which African Americans fought for their rights.  Even though slavery had been abolished during the Civil War, the situation for African Americans was far from ideal.  A set of laws known as the "Jim Crow" laws maintained segregation between blacks and whites by using phrases such as "separate but equal".  In addition, may African Americans were not registered to vote and could not exercise one of their basic rights as American citizens.
