Answer: C.Eric doesn't really think it's fun to be around John.

Although Eric is behaving politely towards John, as he says "hello" and also tells him that it is a pleasure to see him again, the author suggests this is false. By describing his thoughts, we see that Eric thinks the picnic is going to be worse because of John's presence. He also seems annoyed at the fact that John shows up at events often. We can conclude from this that Eric does not think it is fun to be around John.

kykrilka [37]

Answer: a block of ice as long as a football field.

An appositive is a noun or noun phrase which identifies in a different way another noun placed beside it. In this case, the phrase "a block of ice as long as a football field" is a phrase that is renaming the noun "glacier." Appositives are usually set off by commas.

Which line in the excerpt from “Out, Out—” by Robert Frost uses metonymy?
Novay_Z [31]
I think the line 'Since he was old enough to know, big boy' is the best line in the excerpt that uses metonymy. This is because the phrase 'he was old enough' is just an expanded meaning of the phrase 'big boy' - which is what metonymy is all about.
