Emiliano Zapata is one of the most important figures of the Mexican Revolution which began in 1910. One of Zapata´s main demands was a fair agrarian reform that would redistribute the land amongst peasants so that they could own the products of their labor, seeking more just economic relations between the ruling and powerful class and the working class. Thanks to Zapata´s efforts, the Mexican constitution of 1917 included an important article that aimed at actually redistributing the land amongst peasants, lands that would adopt the name of “hejidos” and which, to this day, are still owned by the workers of the land.
